AdBlue® – also known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid – is a colourless liquid composed of urea and de-ionised water. It helps to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) in SCR (selective catalytic reduction) systems, which comply with EU Stage IV emissions regulations.
This technology is already used extensively in the automotive industry, as well as by truck and agricultural machine manufacturers for their exhaust gas after-treatment systems. As only a small amount of AdBlue® is required for every litre of fuel used, it represents an efficient and cost-effective solution.
AdBlue® is used to reduce harmful NOx emissions. However, it is important to follow the correct storage, handling and disposal advice in order to maximise performance and ensure a safe operation.
AdBlue® freezes at -11°C and deteriorates rapidly at temperatures above 40°C. However, the quality is not affected when it returns to normal temperature after being frozen, for example, overnight. The AdBlue® tank contains a heating element to ensure optimum performance in such cold conditions.
Take care when handling AdBlue®. Do not allow contact with your skin, mouth or eyes, and ensure it is stored properly at all times. It is important to avoid contamination of AdBlue® with diesel fuel. It is recommended that you use the Zaxis-6 integrated AdBlue® filler tube to avoid overflow during filling.
AdBlue® should not be diluted with water, which will be detected by a quality sensor in the tank. Also, avoid dust entering the AdBlue® tank when refilling.
Only use dedicated, recommended containers to store AdBlue® as it is corrosive to some metals. It should be kept in a clean, sealed container in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight.
The average shelf life for AdBlue® is 6-12 months, depending on the ambient storage temperature. It is important to avoid storage over 25°C in order to prevent decomposition, or below -5°C to prevent freezing.
Take care not to allow AdBlue® to contaminate the ground water system. Collect any spillages as soon as possible with absorbent material, for example sand, earth or absorption granules. Place the residue in a safe container for disposal according to local and national regulations.
If spillages cannot be contained, contact your local authority as soon as possible to advise them of the situation.
